Chapter 1 – Problem 1.5

1.5 A 10 km long 1m diameter transmission main lifts water from a river source to a treatment plant. Compute the wave period associated with a pump trip event if the pipe material is (a) thin-walled mild steel with a celerity of 1000 m/s and (b) HDPE pipe with a celerity of 300 m/s.

Solution:

Wave period is 2L/c, where L is length the pipeline (in m) between two dominant boundaries (such as multipipe junctions, closed ends, reservoirs, pumps, etc.) and c is pipe celerity or wave speed in m/s.

The dominant boundaries for this pipeline system are the pump at one end and the reservoir at the other end, implying L = 10,000m.

For c = 1000 m/s, 2L/c = 20s. For c = 300 m/s, 2L/c = 66.67s
