Chapter 1 – Problem 1.19
1.19 Consider two pipe elements of the same internal diameter of 1000 mm and the same celerity value of 500 m/s connected to a fully open gate valve as shown in the following. The headloss across the valve is 1.54m when the flow velocity in the pipeline is 1 m/s. The head at the upstream end (left end) of the valve is 100m and the flow is from left to right.

a. A pressure wave of -50m approaches the valve from the left side. Compute the reflected and transmitted pressure waves.
b. A pressure wave of 100m approaches from the right side. Compute the reflected and transmitted pressure waves.
c. A pressure wave of -50m approaches from the left side and another pressure wave of 100m approaches from the right side, both waves arriving at the valve simultaneously. Compute the reflected and transmitted pressure waves. Compute the pressure heads after the wave action on both the upstream and downstream sides of the valve.
